Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

This year for the first time we included graduate students in our chapter. We have an M.S. in Mathematics Education program here, and we looked for students with excellent undergraduate preparation in mathematics and exemplary performance in their mathematics courses in the master’s program. We invited four graduate students to join PME, two of whom accepted. We also identified 5 other students who had been inducted as undergraduates at their home institutions, and we honored them at our induction ceremony. We also inducted two faculty members this year — a new mathematician in our department, and the Dean of the Graduate School — both of whom had completed majors in mathematics and physics as undergraduates. The dean has been a real friend of the department for years and has continued his love for mathematics as he teaches physics and runs the graduate school.

Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2012 PME national meeting at MathFest in Madison, Wisconsin?

No, maybe next year!

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates, for example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences?

Dubravka Bodiroga was honored for having one of the outstanding posters at the undergraduate student poster session at JMM. She will enter the Ph.D. program in mathematics at The George Washington University in the fall. Kizza Nandyose will enter the Ph.D. program in industrial engineering at Virginia Tech in the fall. Matt Shives, our current chapter president, has been accepted into the NSA’s Cryptanalysis and Exploitation Services Summer Program. Andrea Haines has been accepted into the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology for the second year in a row. Kori Junghans has been accepted into graduate school in computer science at Johns Hopkins University. Jamie Bingaman and Josh Haines are entering the Ph.D. program in chemistry at Penn State. And Chris DiGangi will be appearing on television this summer as part of the American Ninja Warrior competition!

If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.

We gave our Pi Mu Epsilon Book Prize to four graduating seniors: Josh Haines, Kori Junghans, Kizza Nandyose, and Matt Shives. Dan Kalman was our PME Lecturer this year, so it seemed appropriate to give these students a copy of his “Uncommon Mathematical Excursions: Polynomia and Related Realms” — signed by the author.
