Hopefully.

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates, for example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences?

Nathan Marculis, class of ’12, worked with Professor Edward Aboufadel and two other 2011 GVSU REU students to solve the InnoCentive, “Boston Pothole Challenge.” His group’s project, for which it received a $9000 cash prize, utilizes wavelet theory, Kruskal’s algorithm, and smart phone sensors to detect potholes. Kate Coveney ’13 was the only student in Michigan and one of only 103 students in the entire country, to receive an $20,000 Ernest Hollings National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Scholarship. Nate Burch ’06 and Matt Stamps ’07 completed Ph.D.s and have accepted post-doctoral positions at North Carolina State University and the University of Helsinki, respectively. Samuel Otten ’06 has accepted a position as assistant professor of mathematics education at the University of Missouri.

If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.

The Michigan Iota Chapter received a matching prize grant, which was used to help pay for book prizes, which were given to the top graduating seniors at the department’s April student awards ceremony.
