Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter mathematical activities this year:
1.)We hosted a regional Pi Mu Epsilon Conference (described below). 2.)Several of our members went to the JMM in San Diego, the MAA Golden Section Meeting in Stockton, and the Northern California Undergraduate Mathematics Conference in Chico.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2013 PME national meeting at MathFest in Hartford, Connecticut?
Not this year.
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences.
Ré Bayless is entering a master’s program in Applied Mathematics in the Fall, and currently holds an internship in the Accounting Department of the Alameda County Fairgrounds. Kelsi Espinoza is starting a PhD program in Statistics at Montana State University in Fall. Michael Harris co-authored a paper titled Area Under the Distance Threshold Curve as an Evaluation Measure for Probabilistic Classifiers that will be published at ICMLDM in July.
If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.
We were awarded a PME Conference Grant to conduct a Regional Pi Mu Epsilon Conference. The theme of this conference was “Applications of Mathematics”. We invited three lecturers to speak, including Mr. Jeffrey Reich, who spoke on Quantum Mechanics, Dr. Michelle Norris, who spoke on Diagnostic Screening for Disease, and Dr. Ravikumar from Sonoma State’s Department of Computer and Engineering Science. Additionally, two Pi Mu Epsilon students gave presentations, and we had a graduate school information session. The event was very successful: approximately 80 students and faculty from five different universities and colleges attended the conference.
