Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

This year, our chapter sponsored two talks for undergraduates. In the fall, Dr. Simon Goberstein (CSUC) gave a talk about “The number e – it is beyond ordinary: a proof that e is irrational.” In the spring, Tara Davis (Vanderbilt) gave a talk about “To Infinity and Beyond.” Both talks were well attended, with about 30 people at each. Tara also led a worksohp for women interested in graduate studies in mathematics or another male dominated field. In addtion, our chapter has participated in a variety of activites sponsored by the math club.

Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2009 PME national meeting at MathFest in Portland, Oregon?

Not sure at this time.

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates, for example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences?

Student Arielle Leitner present her paper “Universal Cycles of Restricted Classes of Words” at the Joint Math Meetings (2009), Mathfest (2008), and a variety of other conferences. Arielle has been accepted to graduate school at UC Santa Barbara. A group of students went to the regional MAA meeting, but did not present posters.
