Activities: The most interesting chapter activity this year was the Mathematics Program in the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Science Mathematics Education (SMED) hosting its 49th Louisiana Beta Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon Initiation Ceremony on April 22nd. We initiated a physics masters learner, Bethuel Khalama; a mathematics masters learner & SMED doctoral candidate, Cynthia Weber; and two undergraduate learners: Cathy Baker in mathematics with a minor in education and Andre’ Spears in biology. Our grand speaker was Dr. Stella Ashford (retired mathematics professor) who presented ‘Problem Solving Using Integer Points on Elliptic Curves’. Special guest at this ceremony was Dr. Rogers J. Newman (La. Beta charter member and retired mathematics professor) who challenged all to ‘Do Math’ everyday. This activity was well attended by faculty, staff, and learners from various mathematics classes.

Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present at the PME National Meeting this year? Currently, no chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2014 PME national meeting at MathFest in Portland, OR.

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduations? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences, etc.
We proudly announce that Bethuel Khamala earned 1st Place in the oral presentations in the Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, & Earth Sciences category at the 88th Annual Conference of the Louisiana Academy of Sciences (LAS) held in Alexandria, La. Secondly, Cathy Baker, a senior, was noted during the SUBR Annual Academic Honors Day Awards Program this spring for making the Dean’s List and SUBR Chancellor Scholar’s list (3.4 + gpa), and recognized as the recipient of the Department of Mathematics Award of Meritorious Scholarship. Thirdly, Andre’ Spears was recognized as a SUBR Chancellor Scholar for 2014 and will intern this summer at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. GREAT NEWS! GO LA BETA!!!
