Seniors with cords.

Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

The annual Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Lecture was given by Ivars Peterson, director of publications for the MAA, on “Geometreks.” We had a nice induction ceremony followed by a reception featuring a cake decorated with the PME key. Several students ordered T-shirts as well as pins. All but one of our seniors ordered honor cords to wear at graduation, and we presented them at the ceremony. We inducted three faculty members this year — two adjuncts and a new member of our department.

Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2009 PME national meeting at MathFest in Portland, Oregon?

I don’t believe so.

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates, for example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences?

Abisola Abolude will begin graduate study in economics in the fall. Benjamin Caplins will begin graduate study in chemistry. Dale and Peggy Moyers were awarded $10,000 in the Davis Projects for Peace program, to expand the school they founded in Haiti.

If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.

Since we were so late submitting our annual report last year, we were not eligible for a prize grant — but we gave a Pi Mu Epsilon Book Prize anyway, at our college’s honors and awards ceremony. (One of our new faculty inductees bought two copies of Euler: Master of Us All, and we gave them to two outstanding juniors.) We are happy that we have remembered to submit our report on time this year!
