Our external speakers came from a variety of institutions including, Winthrop University, University of Central Washington, James Madison University, UNC-Charlotte, and Howard University. They spoke about a variety of topics, including: mathematics research on cancer stem cells, the contentious relationships between some famous historical mathematical figures, applications of elliptic curves to cryptography, and mathematical modeling.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present at the PME National Meeting this year? No.
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduations? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences, etc.
Here is a summary. (1) 13 of our PME members graduated this year. Some are attending graduate school, others will be high school math teachers, and the rest are entering the workforce in STEM careers. If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.
We were awarded a matching grant to help fund our PME Research Award. This award is given to a student or students who have shown outstanding achievement in the dissemination of mathematical research. This year's recipients were Peter Jakes, Nathan Pool, and Kelly Reagan. During their undergraduate careers, they have published or submitted 8 research papers, and they have given 18 presentations at national and regional conferences We were also awarded a Conference Grant which helped fund the 12th annual University of North Carolina Greensboro Regional Mathematics and Statistics Conference. The conference website is, http://www.uncg.edu/mat/rmsc/2016. A total of 222 participants attended the conference, which was held on Friday-Saturday, November 11-12, 2016.
