Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

The highlight of our year was a visit by national councilor Kendra Killpatrick from Pepperdine University. She delivered a well-received talk in our Natural Science and Mathematics Colloquium Series on the Catalan Numbers. She also an informational talk about PME at a Math Club meetings. The invited speaker for our induction ceremony was James Pommersheim, Reed College, who spoke on “Euler-Maclaurin Summation for Polytopes.”

Did any of your chapter members attend or present papers at the 2009 PME national meeting at MathFest in Portland, Oregon?

Five chapter members attended the PME national meeting at MathFest. Two presented papers.

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates, for example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences?

Dania Morales attended the 2009 Summer Mathematics Program for Women at Carleton College. Masaki Ikeda and Dania Morales gave talks at the PME national meeting. Masaki Ikeda won a prize for his talk, “Random Juggling.” Matt Schmidgall and Masaki Ikeda won second place and third place, respectively, for their presentations at the 2009 Pacific Northwest MAA conference in Ellensburg, WA. Laura Waight was awarded an Oregon Space Grant Consortium scholarship.

If you were awarded a PME Lectureship Grant, please briefly describe what took place during the councilor’s visit.

Kendra Killpatrick visited under a PME Lectureship Grant. Her lecture was excellent. Perhaps more importantly, she was motivational for our students. I think she receives some of the credit for the large numbers of students who spoke at meetings this year. She generated excitement about PME membership. Kendra also gave wise advice about our procedures for admitting new members to our chapter, all of which we implemented.
