Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

We hosted a pizza party/movie night in the fall that was rather well attended by both members of PME and other [non-member] math majors and professors. We also donated money to help sponsor the annual SUMS (Shenandoah Undergraduate Mathematics & Statistics) Conference held at JMU, as well as to the service fraternity Gamma Sigma Sigma’s alternative Thanksgiving break program that traveled to New Orleans in November 2008 to rebuild properties ruined by the 2005 Hurricane Katrina.

Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2009 PME national meeting at MathFest in Portland, Oregon?

No.

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates, for example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences?

Several of our members were recognized for various awards given at the JMU Dept. of Mathematics & Statistics Award ceremony in April 2009. Furthermore, outgoing president Kristin McNamara (’09) will be starting the mathematics graduate program ! at the University of Tennessee in the fall, and Molly McHarg (’09) will be starting the Secondary Education graduate program at JMU.
