Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

Chris Schafhauser gave two talks this year. The talks were both titled ‘Maximality of the Bernstein Polynomials’. One talk was at MAA-Wisconsin section, 4/17 Oshkosh, WI, and the other talk was at the Mathfest, Pittsburgh, 9/6. Also, during the 2009/2010 school year our students participated in two modeling contests. One of our teams won the first place for their presentation (judged by other student participants) at the Wisconsin Mathematics Modeling Challenge. The same team participated in the ICM (Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling) contest in February, and they received the Honorable Mention. The Wisconsin Mathematics Modeling Challenge is a regional modeling contest. It was organized for the first time on October 10, 2009 at UW-La Crosse. Students had 24 hours to come up with a model, write the summary of their result, and at the end they presented their work in a 10 minute presentation. UW-Platteville had two teams of three students that participated at this contest. Here are the names of the students who participated in the Wisconsin Mathematics Modeling Challenge on October 10: Richard Jackson, Jeremiah Bell, Kutay Muslu, Charles Payant, Jordan Thole, and Christopher Schafhauser. Charles Payant, Jordan Thole, and Christopher Schafhauser won the first place for their presentation.
