Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:
1) Our "Summer and Travel Abroad Programs for Math Majors" program turned out to be surprisingly exciting as our three student speakers, Arran Hamm, Liyang Diao and Joan Pharr, gave very lively descriptions of their REU and Hungary experiences.
2)The visit of Eve Torrence as part of the National Lectureship program was very successful. Her origami talk was extremely well-received, and students enjoyed talking to her over lunch and during the induction as well.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the PME national meeting at MathFest in San Jose, California?
No.
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences. :
Our new (and graduating) member Michelle Sikes has been selected as a Rhodes scholar. Virginia Johnson will be attending the University of South Carolina PhD Program in the fall.
Do you have a report for a PME grant?:
Eve Torrence visited us on March 27 and 28. She gave an excellent talk about modular origami which was well attended and well received. She then participated in our annual induction and dinner. She discussed Pi Mu Epsilon funding for Mathfest and the Pi Mu Epsilon journal. The next day she met with myself and with our chair and we discussed math club ideas. Finally, she had lunch with a few of our students before she left. The whole event went very well and we enjoyed her visit.
