Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:
1) The Pi Mu Epsilon Problem of the Month has become so well-known across campus (and especially with faculty and staff) that we had a faculty member spoof our Problem of the Month by creating one of his own--in French.
2) We also began a service project this year: tutoring on the weekend before finals. Pi Mu Epsilon members contributed their time in the (typically dashed) hope of donations to the organization. The event lasted 6 - 7 hours each semester, with members ready and able to answer questions relating to (almost) all mathematics courses offered in a given semester.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the PME national meeting at MathFest in San Jose, California?
Ashley Swandby plans to attend MathFest. She is unsure at this time whether she will be presenting her research or not.
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences. :
Ashley Swandby and Zack Johnson competed in the Undergraduate Student Poster Competition at the Maryland-DC-Virginia MAA Sectional meeting this Spring. Zack won first place for his poster on introductory game theory and the game of Nim.Ashley Swandby will be attending an REU this summer and this fall will attend the MASS program at Penn State.
Do you have a report for a PME grant?:
We had continued success with the awards grant. The Pi Mu Epsilon Problem of the Month seems to be more of a fixture on campus now. Our first place prize went to Ashley Swandby (Mathematics major and Pi Mu Epsilon member); the second place prize went to Tim Buckler (Economics major).
