Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:
In the spring, the chapter held a workshop for students interested in learning LaTeX, as well as a "pie day" fundraiser. Each faculty member had a cup in the department office labeled with his/her name and picture. The faculty members whose cups received the most cash donations from students and faculty was "pied" in the fact on March 14th.
In the fall, the club held a lunch gathering in which faculty and students discussed experiences and opportunities for other students interested in pursuing research projects this summer.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the PME national meeting at MathFest in Madison, Wisconsin?
Not sure at this time.
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences. :
Dan Gorski received a "best speaker" award at the Michigan Undergraduate Mathematics Conference. GVSU alumnus and former PME Journal author Nicolas Ceglarek was recognized by the university as part of its alumnus in residence program. Nick pursued a teaching career, but quickly rose through the ranks to become the youngest school superintendent in the state of Michigan.
Two graduates and PME members, Christopher Frayer and Matthew Wells, completed their Ph.D.'s at the University of Kentucky.
