Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:
This was a year of leadership transition, so the chapter was not as active as it should have been. (We are planning to do much better this coming year!) We did have an excellent initiation ceremony that featured a splendid presentation by Catherine Roberts on the modeling of river traffic through the Grand Canyon — the photos alone were worth the price of admission!
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the PME national meeting at MathFest in Madison, Wisconsin?
Not Sure
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates, for example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences?
Claire Stawski (now Davenport), who was elected to PME last year, graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa this year. She is currently being featured on Skidmore’s home page: “Claire Davenport graduated May 17—summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and Periclean—with a B.A. degree in chemistry. Davenport was a single mother who supported herself and her first child while attending Skidmore. Now a married mother of two, she will start Albany Medical College this fall.” Lori Bordzuk, Katie Butler, and Claire Rupprecht, all elected to PME this year, also graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Several members of the chapter presented talks at the Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference at St. Lawrence University in April.
