Activities: At our October meeting, three PC students (Chris Andrews, Ashley Jacobs, and Mary Weaver) who traveled with Dr. Doug Daniel (Math) and Dr. Jerry Slice (Economics) to England last May gave a summary of their activities. Before leaving for England, the class used Livio’s The Equation That Couldn’t Be Solved book. Then the group traveled to Edge Hill University, near Liverpool, with the Math class offered being Dr. Daniel’s Symmetry in Northwest England course. Using Farmer’s Groups and Symmetry text, the class studied many types of symmetry and searched for those examples as well in buildings and architecture in and near Edge Hill. In March, at our Initiation Ceremony, Dr. Tim Chartier of Davidson College served as our Lindner Lecture Series speaker for 2015. The Department of Mathematics created this series in 2013 in honor of distinguished alumnus Dr. Curt Lindner, emeritus professor of mathematics at Auburn University. This year, Dr. Chartier presented “Who’s Number One? From Ranking to Bracketology”, a fascinating description of the application of linear algebra techniques to the process of choosing which teams will advance in a tournament. After Dr. Chartier’s talk, our chapter welcomed its new members.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present at the PME National Meeting this year? No
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduations? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences, etc.
All five of our senior Math Education majors will be teaching this fall, at five different high schools across South Carolina. We also have Math graduates headed to master's programs in accounting, engineering, and public health. Sarah Anderson, PC Class of 2009, completed her doctorate in mathematics at Clemson University this spring and will join the faculty of the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota this fall.
If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.
