Activities: On May 17, 2023 we had our induction ceremony. World-renowned number theorist, graph theorist, and mathematical historian, Professor Robin Wilson of the Open University gave the invited lecture on the origins of mathematics. Following the lecture, we inducted nine incredible members of our community into the organization. We had an exceptional turn out in-person and on Zoom by friends and family not on campus. It was such an honor to have Professor Wilson at our event. The other interesting activity this year was mathematical escape room. This fun event was organized by the United Math Clubs (including some Pi Mu Epsilon members). The clubs created a “haunted classroom” on Halloween with math and computer science puzzles that challenged students to find the key to escape the classroom. The event drew crowds from across campus and we hope to continue this event (maybe making the puzzles slightly easier so some groups can actually escape!) in the coming years.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present at the PME National Meeting this year? Emerson Worrell (continuing member) and Jingyi Liu attended and presented posters at the 2023 Joint Meetings in Boston. We will hopefully have a few students attending in 2024 as well.
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduations? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences, etc.
Our students have many exciting things coming up; we briefly details just some of it! Emerson Worrell (’23), Casmali Lopez (’23), Na’ama Nevo (’23) are attending graduate school in the fall (Oregon State, University of Washington, and Northeastern, respectively). John Lê (’24) was awarded the Barnes Scholarship. Galileo Fries (’24) and Jingyi Liu (’24) will be completing summer REU’s. Cooper Doe (’24) and Lilly Davis (’22) will be in the department next year as paraprofessionals. Sam Kottler (’19) completed his Masters in Computer Science at UW-Madison. Vladi Vintu (’20) completed a Masters in Teaching and started a PhD program in Romania.
If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.
