Activities: The annual Pi Mu Epsilon Lecture was held in conjunction with the Induction Ceremony on November 8, 2024. Our speaker was Dr. Stanley Chang (Professor, Department of Mathematics, Wellesley College) who gave a talk entitled “Voting Systems and the Illusion of Fairness”. One highlight is the September Mathematics and Statistics Colloquium featuring presentations by six students who participated in summer research projects or internships. Among these presenters, there was one continuing PME member and there was one PME inductee: Patrick Gahan ’25 – “NIH Virtual Internship and Project on Examining Quality of Life from Rare Diseases”; Ty Wick ’26 – “Artificial Intelligence for Particle Physics at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)”. Another highlight is that, on November 1, 2024, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics Colloquium was presented by Dr. Mackenzie Edmondson ’16, Senior Scientist at Merck in Early Development Statistics, Biostatistics and Research Decision Sciences (BARDS) department, titled “Exploring a Career as a Biostatistician in the Pharmaceutical Industry”.
