Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:
Induction/Convocation with Professor Angela Spalsbury. Upcoming math club events include a “Battle of the Sexes” and a picnic for all math majors.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2009 PME national meeting at MathFest in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania?
No
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates, for example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences?
Rachel May will be going to grad school at the University of Kentucky to study mathematics. Justin Roush will be going to grad school at the University of Tennessee to study economics. Morgan Smith will be going to grad school at Columbia University to study Middle Eastern Studies.
If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.
We had Angela Spalsbury visit as part of a PME Good Lectureship. It’s been a few years since a campus-wide convocation was given with a mathematics theme, so this helped raise some of the profile of math around campus. Angie had lots of great ideas for how we could be more active as a group and as a math dept, especially in terms of more outreach focused activities. I cannot point to any concrete results from the ideas she shared when she visited at the end of March, but I would say we are thinking and talking about her suggestions and I am optimistic for something more in the coming year.
