Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:
1) In Fall, we proofread a chapter of a solutions manual for a forthcoming calculus textbook, earning $500. We will spend this (together with funds accumulated in past years, and a generous match by the Math Department) on lockers for math majors in the math building.
2)In April, we had our 8th Math Film Festival, with a great schedule ¥ã check it out at http://www.math.umt.edu/mathclub/filmsched07.pdf. Do watch “The Great Pi/e Debate” if you can ¥ã parts of it are really hilarious (if you cannot find it at a library, it is available from http://www.maa.org). And Hans Rosling¥ús talk “Myths About the Developing World” contains amazing graphical representations of statistical data ¥ã you can watch it online at http://video.google.com ¥ã search for “4237353244338529080”. Unfortunately, this year we could not show any blockbuster Hollywood movie. Although we do not charge admission, we would have had to pay nearly $400 to show such a movie, and that does not seem to be an appropriate use of our hard-earned funds.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the PME national meeting at MathFest in San Jose, California?
No.
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences. :
No.
