Mike Hall, Johns Hopkins University School of Education Clinical Faculty, gave a presentation on Teaching Calculus Through a Culturally Responsive Lens. His presentation incorporated the ideals of traditional calculus instruction with the concepts of culturally responsive teaching and learning in a way that illustrated the benefits of using personal experiences as an effective way to engage learners in meaningful ways. Culturally responsive teaching is intended to empower learners in developing their own ways of understanding and communicating about mathematics. This presentation included the key components of culturally responsive teaching in a general sense where mathematics is concerned and multiple examples using calculus topics to engage students in culturally responsive learning.
