Activities: We had a really fun math related ice cream social. We used ice cream toppings to create an interesting and engaging combinatorics problem. We had a high percentage of member participation. Several of our members also participated in EYH, a day-long mathematics conference held at JMU for middle school girls to inspire STEM education.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present at the PME National Meeting this year? No
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduations? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences, etc.
Several of our members have accepted exciting positions or spots in graduate school programs. Many of our members are continuing on at JMU to earn a Masters in Teaching. Our members will be attending University of Santa Barbara and Colorado State University to pursue Ph.Ds in Mathematics. Several members have accepted analyst positions at large companies in the area. One of our members is attending William and Mary to purse a Ph.D in Computer Science.
If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.
We were awarded a grant for our Shenandoah Undergraduate Mathematics Seminar (SUMS), an entirely undergraduate mathematics conference held here at JMU each year. Our president, Morgan Wolf, gave a presentation at this conference.
