Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:
We had a movie night where we watched “The Professor’s Beloved Equation”. A few professors from the math department commented about how the movie accurately captured some of the beauty of mathematics. In February we held our annual high school mathematics contest. It was a success, and we were happy to receive funds for prizes from Pi Mu Epsilon.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2009 PME national meeting at MathFest in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania?
No
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates, for example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences?
John Meuser, who graduated this Spring, will be attending graduate school in mathematics at Texas A&M University. Taole Zhu, who will be a Senior when he returns in the Spring, attended the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics. John Meuser, Taole Zhu, and Steven Hayman (all members of Pi Mu Epsilon) were the members of Illinois Wesleyan’s William Lowell Putnam Competition team. The team placed 67th out of 546 institutions
If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.
We made use of a Prize Grant to pay for prizes for our annual high school math contest. The students had a lot of fun, and it was a success. More details can be found here: http://pme-iwu.wikispaces.com/Math+Contest
