Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:
Annual Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Lecture: David Richeson of Dickinson College. Prof. Richeson, author of the Euler Award-winning book Euler’s Gem, spoke on “Euler’s Beautiful Polyhedron Formula.” Induction ceremony and reception: We inducted 17 students and one faculty member. The College president, provost, v.p. for student affairs, and director of marketing all attended the ceremony, and it was advertised on the College web site.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2009 PME national meeting at MathFest in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania?
I do not believe so.
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates, for example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences?
Dubravka Bodiroga has been accepted into the MIMBioS REU at the University of Tennessee this summer — our first REU student! Mary Combs, graduating this month, has a job as a statistician for the Census Bureau.
If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.
We awarded the Pi Mu Epsilon Book Prize to graduating senior Ali Blickenstaff. Since she plans to teach secondary mathematics, we presented her with the book “Twenty Years Before the Blackboard: The Lessons and Humor of a Mathematics Teacher,” by Michael Stueben, published by the MAA.
