Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

We held an origami lecture where a faculty member talked about the mathematics of origami. It was very well attending and included students from other departments (like English and History!) We also held a very sucessful bowling night, a board game afternoon, and a movie night. We have had a number of students participate actively in the problem solving competition.

Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2009 PME national meeting at MathFest in Portland, Oregon?

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates, for example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences?

One student will attend Washington University in St. Louis to get a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering; another student will get a master’s in Electrical Engineering from SIUE. One student is graduating with a master’s degree is mathematics and has a teaching position at Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey,IL. Another student presented or! iginal research at the MIGHTY conference in Chicago, IL.

If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.

We were awarded a $50 prize grant to run a problem solving competition. We held five competitions throughout the year; each competition had 2 problems and the best solution to each problem received $10. Overall, this was a smashing success! We had a number of students participate, including students from engineering and physics (one faculty member submitted an anonymous solution — but a student solution was better!) We have every intention of continuing this next year, but we need to work on fundraising to ensure that we have the funds to continue this important project.
