Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

1) Annual PME Mathematics Lecture: Prof. Robert Jernigan of American University spoke on Sunday, April 15th, on “Statistics Before your Eyes: Photographs of Statistical Concepts.” Approximately 50 people attended, including our PME members, family and friends, faculty, and the College dean and president. We had a nice reception afterwards.

2) Induction of new members — the same day. The Department buys honor cords for our seniors and presents them at this time. We pretend that it is a surprise, but we think they’ve caught on by seeing this happen every year.

Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the PME national meeting at MathFest in San Jose, California?

Yes. We have four students doing summer research with us this summer; we will probably choose two of them to submit a joint proposal to give a talk in the PME sessions. (The other two will submit to MAA.)

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences. :

Nathan Edington, who won one of the PME prizes at MathFest in Providence for his talk about approximations to pi, is in his second year of graduate school in mathematics at the University of Georgia. He gave that same talk for students and faculty there, and they really enjoyed it. (I am still trying to get him to write it up for the PME Journal!)

Alen Agheksanterian is completing his second year of graduate school in applied mathematics at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Kathryn Linehan is completing her first year of graduate school at the University of Maryland College Park, and Kelly Schultz is completing her first year at Towson University. Both are in applied mathematics.

Do you have a report for a PME grant?:

We received a $50 Chapter Matching Grant, for our Pi Mu Epsilon Book Prizes. They went this year to two juniors, Stephanie Tomasello and Benjamin Caplins. In this Year of Euler, we gave each of them a copy of Bill Dunham’s book, “Euler: Master of us All,” suitably inscribed by the author. The prizes were given at our annual college awards ceremony.Thank you again for this grant, which enables us to recognize outstanding students in mathematics.
