This year 7 John Carroll University B.S. Mathematic majors received the Eugene R. Mittinger Award for Scholarship in Mathematics. This was the largest number to receive this award since 1975. The recipients were Gina Antonelli, Sarah Donnelly, Sandra Gliga, Betsy Rafferty, Anne Rollick, Peter Strada, and Scott Zimmerman. In addition, Rodney Galloway, a graduate with an A.B. Teaching Mathematics degree, received the Raymond W. Allen, S.J. Award. Naturally, all of the above are members of the Ohio Lambda Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon. In addition: Gina Antonelli (B.S. 2008) has accepted a Graduate Assistantship at John Carroll to continue her education in mathematics in the fall. Sandra Donnelly (B.S. 2008) plans to continue her mathematics education in mathematics at John Carroll University in the fall. Sandra Gliga (B.S. 2008) has accepted a Graduate Assistantship at John Carroll to continue her education in mathematics in the fall. Katherine Henley (M.S. 2008) enjoyed her work as a Graduate Assistant at John Carroll so much, that she plans to continue her education at Notre Dame to complete the Ohio requirements for licensure to teach mathematics in high school. Debra (Zwilling) McGivney (M.S. 2006), who has been teaching at Gilmour Academy these past two years, has accepted a Teaching Fellowship to pursue her Ph.D. beginning next fall at Case Western Reserve University. She has also applied for this summer’s program in mathematical biosciences at Ohio State University since she hopes it is in that direction of applied mathematics that her research will take her. Liuyi Liu (B.S. 2007) has accepted a Graduate Assistantship at John Carroll to continue her education in mathematics in the fall. Kerry McIver (B.S. 2007) is working toward her M.A. in Education at John Carroll University. Betsy Rafferty (B.S. 2007) has been accepted into the A.C.E. program at the University of Notre Dame. This is a two-year program with courses during the summer leading to a Master’s in Education combined with full time teaching mathematics as service work in a high school in Alabama. She had been accepted into the UND law school, and they will hold her acceptance open until she completes the ACE program. Anne Rollick (B.S. 2008) was invited to be on a panel to give information about R.E.Us to undergraduates attending the Undergraduate Mathematics Conference at the University of Dayton in November 2007. Anne has been accepted into the Jesuit Volunteer Core to do a year of service on Indian reservations in the Dakotas. Dr. Thomas Short (B.S. 1986) who, after teaching at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Villanova University, will return to John Carroll University as a Professor in the fall. During his interview, he stated that attending and presenting at student mathematics conferences were the highlights of his undergraduate days. Brittany Simon (B.S. 12/2008) will be applying this fall to continue her education in the medical field. Liz Smietana (B.S. 2007) is doing a year of environmental service in Massachusetts. She hopes to return to Ohio next fall to teach in high school. Peter Strada (B.S. 2008) has been successful in his studies of the Actuarial Examinations, and has accepted an actuarial job in Hartford, Connecticut upon graduation. Scott Zimmerman (B.S. 2008) has accepted a Teaching Assistantship at John Carroll to continue his education in mathematics in the fall.

Lecture: A Brief Introduction to Knot Theory and the Jones Polynomial Peter L. Gregory Abstract: Knot theory, combinatorial knot theory in particular, can be explored and understood without much technical or high powered mathematics This talk hopes to display this relative accessibility. The notion of knot and knot equivalence will be discussed so that we may address the fundamental questions of the theory: When are two knots the same? When are they different? How can we tell? For an answer, we will need to define some spatial isotopies, in particular Reidemeister Moves. From these definitions we will have a method for determining when knots are equivalent The opposite, determining when Knots are not the same, will not come as easily, and will require the development of a knot invariant. One such invariant is the Jones Polynomial. We will construct this polynomial from scratch via Kaufmann’s Bracket Polynomial and the Writhe, show that it is indeed a knot invariant, and perform a sample calculation. Lecture: The Fundamental Group: An Introduction to Homotopy Theory David Allen Abstract: In this talk, basic notions in the study of Topology will be discussed. From a “Space” X one constructs an algebraic invariant called the Fundamental Group of X which allows one to detect differences in geometry. The notion of continuous deformation as well as loops at a fixed point in X will be explored. Roughly speaking, the fundamental group of X, denoted !1(X) is the set of all maps from the circle into X satisfying some additional properties. The basic ideas behind the mathematics and computations of this important invariant will be sketched. Cheyne Miller “Algebraic Properties Associated to Certain Simple Convex Polytopes in Lower Dimensions” Abstract: Let P be an n-dimensional simple convex polytope and hp be its associated h-vector. It is natural to ask whether or not the standard vector operations on h-vectors yield any interesting results. For two polytopes, P1 and P2, one has operations such as the product, the connected-sum, and the box product. In the case of the connected-sum, the h-vector of the resulting polytope is defined and can be explicitly computed. This paper will give a detailed example of the connected-sum operation, as this operation is relatively new and explicit examples are not easily found. Moreover, it will be shown that the set of h-vectors associated to simplex convex n-polytopes is a semi-group under the connected-sum for n=2 or n=3.

In April, we had our 9th annual Math Film Festival. We worked hard to make it a great event. The main attraction in the evening was a new, feature-length animated version of the classical novel Flatland, which was created by independent film maker Ladd P. Ehlinger, Jr., who directed, animated and edited the entire film personally. We also had a special treat: the three-minute film The Math Geek, produced by Laura Williams and starring Nick Paterno, both math majors. The only disappointment was the low attendance. Next year, we will have to do a better job advertising. Other fun events included our Gambling Day in November, and the (not-so-unusual) Pi Day fund raiser selling, guess what, pies.

Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

This fall we had a scholarly mathematical evening. We had tea and refreshment, and spent the evening discussing mathematical subjects, telling math jokes and doing math problems. This spring (April 4) we will be having a speaker from Harvard. He will be speaking just before our inductions, and will help to commemorate our first anniversary. We also had a student speak at mathfest in August.

Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the PME national meeting at MathFest in San Jose, California or at the 2008 PME national meeting at MathFest in Madison, Wisconsin.?

Yes, Arielle Leitner plans on attending mathfest in Madison, hopefully we will have others as well.

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences. :

Most of our new inductees are still in school. We do have one alumnus that is doing very well at UC Davis.

PME Merchandise

Pi Mu Epsilon merchandise is usually purchased by chapter advisors for new members at the time of their induction, using the Membership Enrollment Form, found here with instructions.

All other purchases must be made online (here) using PayPal.

Costs include standard shipping. While we will do our best to mail orders within 5 working days of receiving your order, it may take up to 11 business days to send your order, especially during our busy season of March-May. Please keep in mind that enrollment orders are processed by faculty volunteers and one part-time contract employee and that we are not a mail-order business like Amazon.com. Extenuating circumstances sometimes arise that prevent us from filling orders as quickly as one might like. We really appreciate receiving your order as early as possible.
