Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

1. The PME initiation ceremony (held on 19 March 2009) was certainly interesting. Our guest speaker, Kim Plofker, gave a very interesting historical presentation titled “Is Algebra Bad for Mathematics?” 2. “Numb3rs Night”: The student officers organized an entertaining event (held on Thursday, 2 April 2009) at which an episode of the TV show “Numb3rs” was shown, and two faculty members made brief presentations on the mathematics (in this case, differential equations and epidemiology) “featured” in the episode. There was interest in holding another such event in 2009-10.

Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2009 PME national meeting at MathFest in Portland, Oregon?

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates, for example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences?

Skidmore had several excellent Mathematics and Computer Science Majors graduate this spring, and several are on their way to graduate school: Oliver Layton — UCLA Jessada Mahatthananchai — U. Penn Bill Stitson — U. Virginia Rozalina Zlatareva — Tufts (All of the above are members of PME.)
