Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:
For our Third Annual Pi Mu Epsilon Lecture, Prof. Andrew Rich of Manchester College, Indiana, spoke about “The Amazing Hilda Function.” The talk was attended by about 65 people, and was well received. This year we also had 5 undergraduate students speak about research and enrichment activities that they have been involved in.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2009 PME national meeting at MathFest in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania?
No.
If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.
The Nebraska Alpha chapter received a PME grant for prizes for our “Problem of the Fortnight.” Every two weeks, a problem requiring a deeper level of insight (but not mathematics beyond the calculus level) would be posted. The best solution was awarded a $10 gift certificate to the UNL Dairy Store. In most weeks we had about 5-7 submitted solutions. The contest was mainly run by graduate student Derek Boeckner. The Problem of the Fortnight was very successful in generating conversation among students, and faculty too!
