PME members Josh Mike, Kristi Mraz, Lisa Curll, and Moriah Wright were selected to participate in the year-long MBUR Biomath REU held at YSU. They will jointly conduct research with another undergraduate biology major under the supervision of both mathematics and biology faculty. They plan to present this research at both the national PME conference held in Portland, OR, this summer and at the NIMBIOS conference held in Knoxville, TN, this fall.

1. The PME initiation ceremony (held on 19 March 2009) was certainly interesting. Our guest speaker, Kim Plofker, gave a very interesting historical presentation titled “Is Algebra Bad for Mathematics?” 2. “Numb3rs Night”: The student officers organized an entertaining event (held on Thursday, 2 April 2009) at which an episode of the TV show “Numb3rs” was shown, and two faculty members made brief presentations on the mathematics (in this case, differential equations and epidemiology) “featured” in the episode. There was interest in holding another such event in 2009-10.

For our Second Annual Pi Mu Epsilon Lecture, Gwen Fisher of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo spoke about Visualizing Symmetry: How I Use Symmetry Groups in My Art. The talk was attended by about 80 people, and was well received. The Nebraska Alpha chapter received a PME grant for prizes for our “Problem of the Fortnight.” Every two weeks, a problem requiring a deeper level of insight (but not mathematics beyond the calculus level) would be posted. The best solution was awarded a $10 gift certificate to the UNL Dairy Store. In most weeks we had about 5-7 submitted solutions. The contest was run by two graduate students, Brian Kell and Derek Boeckner. The Problem of the Fortnight was very successful in generating conversation among students, and faculty too!

We hosted four talks for the weekly math & physics colloquium series. For one of these meetings we invited representatives from Auto-Owners Insurance to speak on actuarial science. The other three meetings were given by students who spoke about math topics including really BIG numbers, Goldbach’s Conjecture, and the Golden Ratio and Fibonacci numbers.

Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:
The MSU chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon holds weekly meetings. The group was excited by implementation of a new meeting format starting Spring 2009. The weekly meeting topic/agenda now rotates by week. The first week involves a mini-mathematics competition with small prizes. The second week is devoted to problem solving or famous problem deconstruction with problems emailed to students in advance. The third week is a faculty lecture and the final week is a math related movie night. The most interesting meeting or event of the 2008-2009 academic year was the Integration Bee. Nine students particpated. The students formed 3 teams to complete 7 rounds. Each round involved one problem. For each problem, the first person on a team had 1-5 minutes to solve it (depending on the difficulty), then the second person had half that time to finish the problem, and so on. The first team to finish the integral scored a point. The first place team received Rubik’s cubes as prizes. It was especially fun because all the members knew how to integrate, so everyone could take part, and integrals are typically more straightforward than most math competition problems.

As usual, we have several students beginning Ph.D. programs in mathematics or masters programs in education, receiving competitive job offers in industry, and beginning teaching careers. We view our students highly! At our college’s annual GREAT Day (Geneseo Recognizing Excellence, Achievement & Talent) undergraduate symposium, many students gave talks and presented posters. In addition, student presentations have been given at the MAA Seaway section conference and other regional mathematics conferences.

We had our 30th annual Calculus Bee. Everyone works each problem, with a 1-3 minute time limit – three misses and you are out. Everyone has an ID number, so everyone can see how many are still alive. Several stay once out, so many try to guess who is officiallly still in. The math club went bowling. One goal was the highest prime score.

In the fall semester, we invited Fr. Magnus Wenninger, the famed polyhedron builder to show students his construction methods. (He conveniently lives in the monastery here.) For the Christmas party, a new colleague showed students how to make origami polyhedral as Christmas decorations. This spring we had our 33rd Pi Mu Epsilon conference. While our conference was not as packed as last year’s event, we had a very healthy 105 attendees. Ken Millett did a terrific job as our featured speaker. We had 105 people in attendance. Thanks to our Pi Mu Epsilon grant, we were able to give each of the sixteen student speakers a copy of an MAA book. We were also able to provide transportation funding to student speaker coming from other schools, thanks to a grant from the MAA Regional Undergraduate Mathematics Conferences program. We inducted six students and our two new departmental colleagues into Pi Mu Epsilon this year.

Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:
This year for the first time we included graduate students in our chapter. We have an M.S. in Mathematics Education program here, and we looked for students with excellent undergraduate preparation in mathematics and exemplary performance in their mathematics courses in the master’s program. We invited four graduate students to join PME, two of whom accepted. We also identified 5 other students who had been inducted as undergraduates at their home institutions, and we honored them at our induction ceremony. We also inducted two faculty members this year — a new mathematician in our department, and the Dean of the Graduate School — both of whom had completed majors in mathematics and physics as undergraduates. The dean has been a real friend of the department for years and has continued his love for mathematics as he teaches physics and runs the graduate school.

Dubravka Bodiroga was honored for having one of the outstanding posters at the undergraduate student poster session at JMM. She will enter the Ph.D. program in mathematics at The George Washington University in the fall. Kizza Nandyose will enter the Ph.D. program in industrial engineering at Virginia Tech in the fall. Matt Shives, our current chapter president, has been accepted into the NSA’s Cryptanalysis and Exploitation Services Summer Program. Andrea Haines has been accepted into the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology for the second year in a row. Kori Junghans has been accepted into graduate school in computer science at Johns Hopkins University. Jamie Bingaman and Josh Haines are entering the Ph.D. program in chemistry at Penn State. And Chris DiGangi will be appearing on television this summer as part of the American Ninja Warrior competition!

We gave our Pi Mu Epsilon Book Prize to four graduating seniors: Josh Haines, Kori Junghans, Kizza Nandyose, and Matt Shives. Dan Kalman was our PME Lecturer this year, so it seemed appropriate to give these students a copy of his “Uncommon Mathematical Excursions: Polynomia and Related Realms” — signed by the author.

We were awarded the Prize Grant to conduct a mathematics competition in the Spring 2012 semester. Each week, a new problem was posted, and students in the math department submitted solutions. We offered $5 for the best solution each week, and a grand prize of $50 to the student who won the most problems each week. The winner of the competition was Kelsi Espinoza, who was also inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon this year. Quite a few students worked on solutions to problems, and several won cash prizes. The competition was therefore successful in promoting scholarship in mathematics. |
