Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

1) In September of 2007 the Alpha Chapter (Illinois) hosted a talk by Prof. John Stillwell or Monash University (Australia) and the University of San Francisco. His talk, titled “A Brief History of Space”, related how the shape of the universe has been a controversial subject since ancient times, and has evolved alongside mathematical concepts of space.

2) In January, we had a double induction since a blizzard and ice storm cancelled out our December induction. The double size crowd was wellentertained by Prof. Rick Gorvett’s talk on mathematics and the financialsciences. Prof. Gorvett is conducting one of the REU programs summer 2007

3) In the fall, PME jointly with the MATRIX mathematical social club, had mathmovies and in the spring we made a field trip to the CAVE virtual environmentof the Beckman Institute. Pizza parties and invitations to departmental colloquium parties rounded out our social program.

Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the PME national meeting at MathFest in San Jose, California?

Not at this moment. But this could change once our REUs are in fullswing.

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences. :

Members of PME, but not of our chapter, who developed interesting projectsin our Geometrical Visualization in Virtual Environments REU presented theirwork at Mathfest in Knoxville, August 2006.

Do you have a report for a PME grant?

Well, since we didn’t report last year, I should mention that Prof. Robert Smith of Miami University, Ohio, launched our rebirth and renaissance inthe fall of 2005. In that year we inducted 29 new members in the fall, and 19 new members in the spring. PME at UIUC had been dormant foralmost a whole generation. Prof. Smith inspired us to reverse this deplorable trend, for which we thank him, and PME for making his visti possible.

In November, we held our fifth annual Math Formal dinner and dance. This event is a joint event of our PME chapter and our MAA Student Chapter. The evening begins with an induction ceremony, then we have a nice dinner, a math talk by a guest speaker, and then an evening of dancing. About 40 people attended, and we had a wonderful time.

In March we celebrated Pi Day Day rather vigorously. Our MAA Student chapter sells temporary Pi Day tatoos that most students wear during the day and PME sponsors a pie eating contest for anyone interested in signing up. In addition, we draw the digits of pi in chalk all over the main plaza on campus and meet in the evening to eat pie together.

One talk was at MAA-Wisconsin section, 4/17 Oshkosh, WI, and the other talk was at the Mathfest, Pittsburgh, 9/6. Also, during the 2009/2010 school year our students participated in two modeling contests. One of our teams won the first place for their presentation (judged by other student participants) at the Wisconsin Mathematics Modeling Challenge. The same team participated in the ICM (Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling) contest in February, and they received the Honorable Mention. The Wisconsin Mathematics Modeling Challenge is a regional modeling contest. It was organized for the first time on October 10, 2009 at UW-La Crosse. Students had 24 hours to come up with a model, write the summary of their result, and at the end they presented their work in a 10 minute presentation. UW-Platteville had two teams of three students that participated at this contest. Here are the names of the students who participated in the Wisconsin Mathematics Modeling Challenge on October 10: Richard Jackson, Jeremiah Bell, Kutay Muslu, Charles Payant, Jordan Thole, and Christopher Schafhauser. Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

Our Pi Mu Epsilon Induction Ceremony was held in conjunction with the mathematics department’s program honoring all of the accomplishments of our graduating mathematics majors. Instead of a Pi Mu Epsilon Banquet just for the PME members at a different time like we usually did, this year PME sponsored a picnic for all the the graduates, the faculty, and those of the graduates’ families who could attend. Our tee shirt, designed last year and sold this year was very popular, even among the non-math majors. Do you think the quote on the shirt “I want to be your derivative so I can lie tangent to your curves” had anything to do with its popularity?

Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2009 PME national meeting at MathFest in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania?

Yes, we will have at least two speakers from our Chapter in Pittsburgh.

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates, for example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences?

Pam Castricone will spend the summer between her junior and senior year as an intern and actuarial trainee at Towers Perrin. She was hired as a result of a talk given to our Pi Mu Epsilon Chapter by former Ohio Lambda President Christine Schlauch. Christine is now an Associate in the Society of Actuaries. Bob Short gave a talk on geometric and calculus implications of material in the book “Flatland” at the undergraduate mathematics conferences at the University of Dayton in early November and at Penn State University in late November. Past President Michael Joseph gave a talk on Primitive Pythagorean Triples at the Ohio Section of the MAA in April. Part of his research led to a new entry about PPTs in the Wikipedia. He will be presenting his results at PME’s conference in Pittsburgh this August. President Kaylee Sutton gave talks on her research into Pell’s Equation at the undergraduate mathematics conferences at Penn State University in November and at the conference for undergraduate women in mathematics at the University of Nebraska in February. She will be presenting her results at PME’s conference in Pittsburgh this August. John Carroll’s two-person team of PME members Anthony Lanese and Michael Joseph placed 4th among all the teams (most of which had three members) in the mathematics competition for undergraduates held at Kent State University in April. Debra Zwilling, who spend a couple years teaching high school after graduating from John Carroll University, is in her first year of Ph.D. studies in mathematics at Case Western Reserve University. Marie Dailey and Scott Zimmerman, who will be receiving their M.S. degrees in mathematics from John Carroll University, are hoping to attend MathFest and support our two student speakers. Marie spoke at our conferences in Knoxville and San Jose, and knows what great mathematics events they are. Scott spoke at several regional conferences and had a talk prepared for the Wisconsin meeting, but was prevented from going because of a wedding in the family. He wants to see what all the fuss is about concerning our national conference. Finally, Tom Short, who was inducted into our Ohio Lambda Chapter in 1985, and then went on to receive his Ph.D. in Statistics and teach at two universities in Pennsylvania, has returned to our faculty as a full Professor. Tom has been appointed to be our new Chapter Advisor.

Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

This year our club participated in several activities in conjunction with the Physics club. The students organized a pie sale and pie eating contest for Pi Day. We also had our traditional Calculus Competition and winning group was composed of a Math Major and a Physics major. Our induction ceremony was very successful. We offered a light lunch for our students and faculty. Eight members were inducted to PME this year. The Physics department held their PSP induction ceremony at the same time and they inducted 4 members to their honor society.

We had Angela Spalsbury visit as part of a PME Good Lectureship. It’s been a few years since a campus-wide convocation was given with a mathematics theme, so this helped raise some of the profile of math around campus. Angie had lots of great ideas for how we could be more active as a group and as a math dept, especially in terms of more outreach focused activities. I cannot point to any concrete results from the ideas she shared when she visited at the end of March, but I would say we are thinking and talking about her suggestions and I am optimistic for something more in the coming year.

Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

This year, our chapter hosted a “Math Outreach” booth on campus to try and address what we perceived as unwarranted fears of and biases against mathematics among students. We wanted to spread the word that math can be fun and exciting to study and can lead to a wide variety of career options. Our booth displayed posters with fun math facts and information about opportunities available to math majors. Another successful event we held on campus was our Grad School Information Talk and Discussion Forum. We invited professors and grad students from various universities to come and talk about their experiences with studying math at a graduate level and to share information about how students can best prepare to go to grad school. We held this event to try and address our concern that information about graduate studies in mathematics was underrepresented in other university grad school events. This event was very popular, and our guest speakers answered many questions in the discussion part of the event.

Kate Thomas was also ! awarded this scholarship for the current year and is graduating this May.

One thing we did this year was use our equipment for the Science Bowl we host each year to have a Math Bowl at one of our meetings. It turned out to be a great success, and all of the students really enjoyed it. Everyone enjoyed doing these fast-paced problems while learning new methods to solve them. Another fun activity we did was led by our adviser, Dr. Philip Yasskin. At one of meetings, he led a fun and interactive lesson about knot theory. He would have several students use ropes to create a knot, then he would have all of the other students figure out how to unravel the knot. It was a very interesting and fun activity.

Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter mathematical activities this year:
Since 2012-2013 was our first full year as a chapter, we would like to highlight three of our activities: (1) In September, Joy Eckert (a junior math major) gave a talk based on her summer research at NASA with the National Space Biomedical Research Institute. Her presentation, “Involvement of Medication in Vision and ICP Changes Seen in Spaceflight,” outlined some interesting connections between mathematics and biology, hopefully inspiring more students to pursue summer research. (2) In October, Dr. Latha Gearheart of PC’s Chemistry Department gave a presentation on “The Intersection of Chemistry and Math.” He noted the many common elements (pun intended) of math and chemistry and pointed out how Robert Boyle, the “father of modern chemistry,” applied math in his research. Dr. Gearheart concluded by demonstrating Boyle’s Law with the classic “balloon in liquid nitrogen” experiment. (3) In March, we welcomed 11 new members into our chapter. Our initiation ceremony included a talk by Dr. Curt Lindner of Auburn University, a 1960 PC alumnus. He gave a fascinating presentation of the history behind the Euler Officer Problem, with connections to the search for mutually orthogonal Latin squares (which exist for all n except n = 2 and n = 6). Afterward, we surprised Dr. Lindner with the announcement that we will honor him by naming our annual lecture series after him.

Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter mathematical activities this year:
The Department of Mathematics held its 48th Louisiana Beta Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon Initiation Ceremony on April 10, 2013. We initiated a mathematics masters graduate, Tiffany Vappie, who presented her thesis. Special guest at our ceremony was Mrs. Janifer A. Broome Peters, a 1963 initiate of La. Beta’s 4th Initiation. Mr. Jeffrey Thomas presented information about our ‘Honored Guest’, Dr. Rogers J. Newman. Dr. Newman was a charter member of La. Beta Chapter in 1960 where the Director General, J. Sutherland Frame, presided at our initial ceremony. This semester’s program was well attended by faculty, staff, and learners from various mathematics classes. The La. Beta Chapter held its annual fall interest meeting, and sponsored a bulletin-board display which included mathematics books written by SUBR mathematics faculty members as one of its spring activities.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2013 PME national meeting at MathFest in Hartford, Connecticut?
Efforts will be made for a representative from La. Beta Chapter to attend the national meeting in Hartford.
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences.
We proudly announce that our outgoing President and a spring 2012 initiate, John Pierre’ LaFleur, received the Mathematics Department Meritorious Award and graduated with a Bachelor degree in Mathematics this spring. As a result of his presentation, LaFleur placed 3rd at the 70th Annual Joint Session of Beta Kappa Chi & the National Institute of Science in Reston, Virginia this spring. We recently learned that one of our 43rd La. Beta Chapter initiates in 2004 and a 2004 B.S. Mathematics graduate, Quintina Hardesty-Jones, received her second masters from North Carolina State University last year. Mrs. Jones received this degree in Engineering with emphasis in Industrial and Systems Engineering. GREAT NEWS, GO LA BETA!!!

We have seen a less than mediocre showing of members in our meetings this academic year. Most meetings only have the officers (and guest speakers) as attendees. Dismayed be not, the officers worked hard on revamping the Chapter’s infrastructure, yielding fruitful results which may be partially seen on our new website. Other Chapters are welcome to imitate or inquire about our web design or document layouts, etc. The officers sincerely hope that the labor paved way for the future success of our Chapter.
