Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter mathematical activities this year:
The Department of Mathematics held its 48th Louisiana Beta Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon Initiation Ceremony on April 10, 2013. We initiated a mathematics masters graduate, Tiffany Vappie, who presented her thesis. Special guest at our ceremony was Mrs. Janifer A. Broome Peters, a 1963 initiate of La. Beta’s 4th Initiation. Mr. Jeffrey Thomas presented information about our ‘Honored Guest’, Dr. Rogers J. Newman. Dr. Newman was a charter member of La. Beta Chapter in 1960 where the Director General, J. Sutherland Frame, presided at our initial ceremony. This semester’s program was well attended by faculty, staff, and learners from various mathematics classes. The La. Beta Chapter held its annual fall interest meeting, and sponsored a bulletin-board display which included mathematics books written by SUBR mathematics faculty members as one of its spring activities.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2013 PME national meeting at MathFest in Hartford, Connecticut?
Efforts will be made for a representative from La. Beta Chapter to attend the national meeting in Hartford.
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences.
We proudly announce that our outgoing President and a spring 2012 initiate, John Pierre’ LaFleur, received the Mathematics Department Meritorious Award and graduated with a Bachelor degree in Mathematics this spring. As a result of his presentation, LaFleur placed 3rd at the 70th Annual Joint Session of Beta Kappa Chi & the National Institute of Science in Reston, Virginia this spring. We recently learned that one of our 43rd La. Beta Chapter initiates in 2004 and a 2004 B.S. Mathematics graduate, Quintina Hardesty-Jones, received her second masters from North Carolina State University last year. Mrs. Jones received this degree in Engineering with emphasis in Industrial and Systems Engineering. GREAT NEWS, GO LA BETA!!!

If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.
