We received a matching grant of $100 for awards to students who give talks at our annual “Math Matters” event. I’m pleased to say that we had the largest number of participants that we’ve had, nine in total. One of the interesting features was that three pairs of students gave joint presentations. Here is a list of speakers and their topics: Kenda Barnes: "Modelling Adult Women's Weight" In this presentation, I will walk through the steps that I took in order to try to create a model that could predict adult women's weight with relative accuracy. Diana Bezuhlyy: "Modeling the Volatility of Lincoln Financial Group Daily Stock Returns" This presentation focuses on exploring the volatility of Lincoln Financial daily stock returns for the period from 2009 to 2016. The analysis is based on employing t-EGARCH model to fit the data. Duy Anh Do and Giang Le: "How math guides the stars" This presentation will briefly go through the history of astronomy, focusing on the use of the mathematics machinery invented in the Renaissance, particularly the Cartesian coordinate to model Euclidean space and the method of calculus, in order to explain Kepler's laws of planetary motions from Newton's law of universal gravitation. Anthony Hartle: "Calculating NHL ratings using an adapted Elo model" The model uses head to head outcomes to rate teams. Using the ratings, predictions and analysis can be done over the 2000 to 2015 seasons. Aaron Thieme and Matthew Wyss: "Formality as Permutation Invariance" In this presentation we explore how to make precise the sense in which mathematical structures are formal. Srikiran Dasari and Connor Mallot: "Families of Polar Curves" We present the interesting and beautiful shapes taken by the different members of several families of polar curves.
