PME Advisors Award – Call for Nominations

The executive council is now accepting nominations for the Triennial Advisor Award, and is particularly interested in receiving submissions from the society’s student members.

A few years ago, Pi Mu Epsilon established an award intended to recognize a local chapter advisor for his or her contributions to the society. Named in honor of its benefactor, the late Professor J. Douglas Faires, the Triennial Advisor Award will next be presented at this summer’s annual Pi Mu Epsilon Conference, held in conjunction with MathFest, the summer’s meeting of the Mathematical Association of America, in Portland, Oregon from August 6-9, 2014. In addition to being recognized at the Pi Mu Epsilon banquet, the award recipient will receive a plaque and a $500 prize.

Please note that sitting members of the Pi Mu Epsilon council (the Past-President, President, President-Elect, Journal Editor, and four Councilors), are ineligible to receive the award.

If you wish to nominate your current or past advisor, please send Pi Mu Epsilon President, Eve Torrence (etorrenc@rmc.edu) an email by June 1, 2014 that includes the following information:

1. The nominee’s name, institution, and chapter letter. (See the PME webpage if you don’t know the chapter letter.)
2. A brief description of the advisor’s role in promoting undergraduate mathematics scholarship. Examples include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. Ensuring the local chapter meets on a regular basis.
b. Assisting with planning activities, such as social events, inviting outside speakers, etc.
c. Mentoring students as research project advisors.
d. Encouraging students to participate in other scholarly activities, such as attending conferences and/or giving presentations.
e. Serving as an academic advisor in terms of helping students make decisions regarding professional goals, attending graduate school, etc.

Ideally, the award should recognize an advisor who has contributed in several of the above ways and who has made a lasting impression upon his or her students, one that will be remembered for years to come.

Please consider nominating a deserving faculty advisor for this award.

Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

1) The Pi Mu Epsilon Problem of the Month has become so well-known across campus (and especially with faculty and staff) that we had a faculty member spoof our Problem of the Month by creating one of his own–in French.

2) We also began a service project this year: tutoring on the weekend before finals. Pi Mu Epsilon members contributed their time in the (typically dashed) hope of donations to the organization. The event lasted 6 – 7 hours each semester, with members ready and able to answer questions relating to (almost) all mathematics courses offered in a given semester.

Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the PME national meeting at MathFest in San Jose, California?

Ashley Swandby plans to attend MathFest. She is unsure at this time whether she will be presenting her research or not.

Do you have a report for a PME grant?:

We had continued success with the awards grant. The Pi Mu Epsilon Problem of the Month seems to be more of a fixture on campus now. Our first place prize went to Ashley Swandby (Mathematics major and Pi Mu Epsilon member); the second place prize went to Tim Buckler (Economics major).

Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

1) In Fall, we proofread a chapter of a solutions manual for a forthcoming calculus textbook, earning $500. We will spend this (together with funds accumulated in past years, and a generous match by the Math Department) on lockers for math majors in the math building.

2)In April, we had our 8th Math Film Festival, with a great schedule ‰¥ã check it out at http://www.math.umt.edu/mathclub/filmsched07.pdf. Do watch “The Great Pi/e Debate” if you can ‰¥ã parts of it are really hilarious (if you cannot find it at a library, it is available from http://www.maa.org). And Hans Rosling‰¥ús talk “Myths About the Developing World” contains amazing graphical representations of statistical data ‰¥ã you can watch it online at http://video.google.com ‰¥ã search for “4237353244338529080”. Unfortunately, this year we could not show any blockbuster Hollywood movie. Although we do not charge admission, we would have had to pay nearly $400 to show such a movie, and that does not seem to be an appropriate use of our hard-earned funds.

Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

1) The Minnesota Delta Chapter had another successful year. The major event was our 29th annual Pi Mu Epsilon Conference. The featured speaker was Carlos Castillo-Chavez from Arizona State University, who spoke engagingly about epidemics and national security.

2) In addition we had student speakers from 5 institutions besides our own two student speakers. Our two student speakers, Natalie Bly and Matt Voigt, completed honors theses this year. We inducted them into Pi Mu Epsilon at the annual pizza and volleyball party at which we also welcome our new sophomore majors (a formidable group on the volleyball court AND in the classroom!) Last November these students plus one other also gave talks at the St. Norbert䴜s PME conference. Other events this year included the seventh donut coloring contest, which provided much amusement, as well as donuts, for the many students who entered the contest, and a special session on constructing interesting polyhedral models with our own Fr. Magnus Wenninger

Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

1) Annual PME Mathematics Lecture: Prof. Robert Jernigan of American University spoke on Sunday, April 15th, on “Statistics Before your Eyes: Photographs of Statistical Concepts.” Approximately 50 people attended, including our PME members, family and friends, faculty, and the College dean and president. We had a nice reception afterwards.

2) Induction of new members — the same day. The Department buys honor cords for our seniors and presents them at this time. We pretend that it is a surprise, but we think they’ve caught on by seeing this happen every year.

Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the PME national meeting at MathFest in San Jose, California?

Yes. We have four students doing summer research with us this summer; we will probably choose two of them to submit a joint proposal to give a talk in the PME sessions. (The other two will submit to MAA.)

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences. :

Nathan Edington, who won one of the PME prizes at MathFest in Providence for his talk about approximations to pi, is in his second year of graduate school in mathematics at the University of Georgia. He gave that same talk for students and faculty there, and they really enjoyed it. (I am still trying to get him to write it up for the PME Journal!)

Alen Agheksanterian is completing his second year of graduate school in applied mathematics at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Kathryn Linehan is completing her first year of graduate school at the University of Maryland College Park, and Kelly Schultz is completing her first year at Towson University. Both are in applied mathematics.

Do you have a report for a PME grant?:

We received a $50 Chapter Matching Grant, for our Pi Mu Epsilon Book Prizes. They went this year to two juniors, Stephanie Tomasello and Benjamin Caplins. In this Year of Euler, we gave each of them a copy of Bill Dunham’s book, “Euler: Master of us All,” suitably inscribed by the author. The prizes were given at our annual college awards ceremony.Thank you again for this grant, which enables us to recognize outstanding students in mathematics.

1) This year we re-started our annual Calculus Competition, after a one-year break due to Hurricane Katrina related problems. The competition was co-sponsored by all the science departments, by the dean’s office, and by Pi Mu Epsilon. The competition had two categories: Calculus I and Calculus I/II. Winners in the categories came from all the sciences and mathematics. We even had a Philosophy major among the winners.

2)Related to this was our Award Banquet and Induction Ceremony. All the participants in the Calculus Competition were invited to this evening event sponsored largely by the Mathematics Department. It turned out to be an evening of conversation and camaraderie between faculty and students with Mathematics as the backdrop.
