The Richard V. Andree Awards are given annually to the authors of the papers, written by undergraduate students, that have been judged by the officers and councilors of Pi Mu Epsilon to be the best that have appeared in the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal in the past year.
Until his death in 1987, Richard V. Andree was Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of Oklahoma. He had served Pi Mu Epsilon for many years and in a variety of capacities: as President, as Secretary-Treasurer, and as Editor of this Journal.

PME is now accepting submissions for 15 minute talks for the PME Student Paper Sessions at MathFest in Washington DC, August 5 – 8, 2015. Generous travel support is available to all PME student speakers. Details on submitting a talk, registering for MathFest, and applying for funding can be found under the PME Conferences drop down menu. The deadline for talk submissions is June 5, 2015.
Good lectureships provide up to $500 in travel expenses for a member of the PME Council to visit your chapter, give a mathematical talk, and met with students and faculty to share ideas for enhancing your chapter’s programs. The application process is simple and most applications are funded. To apply fill out the online form found on the PME Grants page.
The Pi Mu Epsilon Journal will soon be available on JSTOR. Many thanks to Pi Mu Epsilon Journal editor Brigitte Servatius for all her hard working in making the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal searchable and indexed for all to enjoy.
The Ohio Iota chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon at Denison University celebrated the centennial by creating a lavender and gold paper chain of Mobius bands. The first charter and roll book (featuring two professors emeriti!) are proudly featured in the display case.
The PME Council thanks all the chapters that sent entries. The other entries can be seen below.

In celebration of the Society’s 2014 Centennial Mercy College held a Math Fest on November 5, 2014. Dr. Len Brin of Southern Connecticut State University gave a talk, “Fractals: An Infinite Journey in Finite Time”. The Alpha Gamma chapter of PME then built a three dimensional fractal under the guidance of Dr. Brin.

Pi Mu Epsilon occasionally bestows a special award to people who have made significant contributions to the Society and its student members. The C. C. MacDuffee Award for Distinguished Service was first given in 1965. The first recipient was J. Sutherland Frame and there have been only fourteen others. The MacDuffee award is not given annually, but (in the words of the 1965 PME Council) “often enough to be recognized and seldom enough to be meaningful.”
David Sutherland was inducted into the Arkansas Beta Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon as a student at Hendrix College on May 9, 1979. In 2014 he finished his term as Past President of PME after 15 years of exceptional service on the PME Council.
When David first joined the PME Council he took on the job of Webmaster. He greatly expanded and enhanced the website. He worked for years to digitize the back issues of the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal into a searchable database. David was always willing to travel for PME on a moment’s notice and made 23 official PME visits to Chapters in 14 states, from Florida to North Dakota.
As the PME Centennial approached David became the PME historian. He made arrangements with the Mathematics Archives to accept PME memorabilia in their collections. He went through numerous boxes of documents, digitizing many and curating those he selected for the archives. He created exhibits of historical documents to display at the 2014 JMM and MathFest and wrote an article for MAA Focus on the PME Centennial.
David worked with numerous Hendrix College students on research projects, brought many students to speak at the PME meeting at Mathfest, and his students published several articles in the PME Journal.
But it was his gentle leadership after the sudden death of beloved PME Secretary/Treasurer Leo Schneider in 2010 that was his greatest inspiration to all PME members, and the Council in particular. It was a very difficult loss for the Society, and David got us through it with extraordinary grace and kindness.
