About

The 2020 Pi Mu Epsilon (PME) National Meeting will be held at the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) MathFest conference in Philadelphia, PA from July 29-July 31.

Application and Registration

With approval from their Chapter Advisor, PME student members wishing to attend the National Meeting at MathFest may do so either as a Speaker (giving an oral presentation) or as their chapter’s Official Delegate (non presenter). The application process consists of TWO STEPS:

  1. Apply to be a PME Speaker/Delegate; make sure to follow all directions on that page. The deadline is Friday, June 12, 2020.
  2. Regster for the Conference; make sure to follow all directions on that page. If you register by May 1, 2020, the cost is $179. The price is set by the MAA and increases after this date.

Funding Policies

Below are policies regarding travel funding to the PME Conference at MathFest.

  1. Only PME Speakers and Delegates are eligible for funding, and only when they have been initiated and have paid membership dues by June 1, 2020.
  2. No student may apply for funding from both PME and the MAA.
  3. Each PME Speaker may receive transportation support of up to $600 per student. Each chapter may elect to send up to one non-presenting PME Delegate who may receive transportation support of up to $300. The maximum transportation support per chapter is $1500.
  4. All funded PME students (both Speakers and Delegates) receive a sustenance stipend (in 2020, this amount is at least $400).
  5. Allowable transportation expenses include airfare, train ticket, automobile mileage, parking expenses, and ground transportation to the Conference headquarters.
  6. Shortly after the PME Application deadline of June 12, 2020, each Speaker and Delegate will receive instructions for submitting transportation information and PDF copies of receipts. All instructions must be followed and all email correspondence from PME must be answered promptly, otherwise students risk forfeiting all society funding.
  7. PDF copies of receipts are required for transportation reimbursement.
  8. Students should not make any travel purchases until they have applied to be a PME Speaker/Delegate and registered for MathFest.
  9. Speakers and Delegates will receive travel reimbursement and sustenance checks immediately after the PME Banquet (on Friday evening at the Conference). No funds are available from PME before that time.
  10. Speakers and Delegates who receive PME travel funding are required to attend events throughout the entire Conference, including the following:
    • The Opening PME-MAA Student Reception on Wednesday afternoon.
    • The J. Sutherland Frame Lecture on Wednesday evening.
    • Pi Mu Epsilon Student Paper Sessions on Thursday and Friday.
    • The Pi Mu Epsilon Banquet on Friday evening.
    • Speakers or Delegates who do not attend one of the above events must obtain, prior to the Conference, an exemption from PME President, Stephanie Edwards (sedwards@hope.edu), or risk forfeiting all PME funding.
    • Speakers and Delegates are encouraged to attend MAA talks and student events which do not conflict with the above obligations.
